Dear Friends---It is a thunder rumbling grey day in my wee town of Fredonia, Alabama, and I hear the greyness, immense sadness of your days, and I want to send you my love and admiration. At the recent memorial service for a precious Peacemaker friend Lil Corrigan who died just after her 90th birthday, I wore my blue scarf, precious gift from Kathy Kelly and told the people about its origin, celebrating one blue sky above us all.

Before me is an old card from Friends Committee on National Legislation (Quaker organization working for peace and justice) picturing mountainous deep grey ocean waves but over them yellow green on which there is a quote from George Fox (1647): "I saw also that there was an ocean of darkness and death, but an infinite ocean of light and love which flowed over the ocean of darkness. And in that also I saw the infinite love of God; and I had great openings."Above the quote, stretches of that blue sky.

Out of your darkness, you send love letters to our world. Thank you. And thank you, Sadaf, for the powerful doves of peace you send into our world.

"Another world IS possible" was repeated again throughout the "Justice in Motion" presentation made twice this week-end here in Alabama by my friend Sarah from the Center for Development in Central America, located in Nicaragua. Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the western hemisphere; no longer in fighting wars but as a result of them-and devastation by Category 5 hurricanes and our world's unjust economics--people there are also suffering. But also many are joining together to help make that other possible world, farmers, unable to afford the ultimately toxic pesticides and fertilizers, are farming organically and, as a cooperative, marketing their products.

Out of the angst of war and loss, you all are joining, reaching out to people globally, helping create that better world.

To you and through you, peace and love,
Judy

A song for Abdulhai
Your sadness does not break my heart.
My heart is strong for you.
For you are the voice on wings.
On wings our prayers fly to Allah.
Allah who knows this world.
This world that holds us all.
All together, as one heart.

Would that all mothers and their children could enjoy the peaceful, celebratory time with family that was intended for this special day - and that should be available throughout the year. How is it that we are so far away from that simple goal? Yet the vision of such times, which you keep alive and work so hard to attain, drives us ever closer to that day.

With much love to you and your families from September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows,

Dear friends,
I am grateful for the chance to see your beautiful faces and hear your voices. Since I have "met" you through the Global Days of Listening, you have become like family to me. I know that I am just one of your very many friends in the world, and please know that we think of you often, and work to tell others about the suffering you and others who live in war endure and work also for peace finally in your country. We will not give up because you do not give up! That was what Zekerrulah (sorry for misspelling) said on the very first call I made to the APVs more than two years ago. I have never forgotten it. Stay strong dear friends! Someday I hope to meet you in person. Until then, I send my love.

My dearest Hakim, Samia, Abdulhai, Roz Mohammad, Now Rozi, Fais, Gulahmai, Ali, Mustafa, Kamad Jan, Martin, Ahmed Sharif, Medhi, Bohar, and all you others that I am not naming because of my weak memory for names: I love and miss you. What makes me happy is knowing that Kathy is there with you and it is spring time. I want to hold Abdulhai's mother knowing how she aches, missing her sons. I want to hold the whole world knowing it is so full of pain and war. You are my friends so far away, will I get to see you again? I must work hard from here in my country to help stop the war making. It seems so tiny, our efforts. But our love is the greatest force of all. When we continue to love each other no matter what, that is the most subversive act in the face of the war making.
I am planting the garden here, the fruit trees are blooming, your happiness and sadness have the force of a hurricane to me.
love,
Martha

Hi Samia
I am both happy and proud that you have a chance to be in school! I admire how you hold onto your dream with tenacity. The people around us may look down upon us for what we do not have. What is important is that we don't look down on ourselves. Each day you will get closer to your goal as long as you don't give up.

Hi Hakhim
You write about the painful flight of their ordinary Afghans, their struggles and their pain with such eloquence.
Reading your letter reminds me what is important in life. Thank you for sacrificing a good life in where you could have been and being there with the brothers and sisters in Aghanistan instead.

I am very proud of Samia and Walina. I love their cheerful demeanor, though I know they suffer very much. Yet it seems as if even diffiicult times and emotional pain cannot sap the natural good spirits of children. If only I could fly on a magic carpet and hug them both and give them toys and hope and security.
